Pilates is a form of exercise that was originally created by a man by the name of Joseph Pilates. Joe was born in Germany in the early 1900’s. He was small and sickly as a child. He was influenced by his father, a prize winning gymnast and his mother, a naturopath, who believed in the body’s ability to heal itself.
With this influence he chose to educate himself in anatomy bodybuilding, yoga, and martial arts. He strengthened his body and became convinced that bad posture, and inefficient breathing were the roots of poor health.
He developed a unique series of exercises to help correct muscular imbalances and improve posture, balance, coordination, breathing, strength and flexibility. He also created a variety of machines, based on spring resistance that could be used to perform these exercises.
At Metamorphosis Pilates we emphasize the connection between mind, body and spirit. We believe that the physical body is a manifestation of our mental, spiritual, and emotional body.
With attention on the physical body, we can also move the emotional, spiritual and mental body. We believe when you connect with mind body and spirit, you will flourish.
Our metaphor for this is the caterpiller and butterfly. The caterpillar’s DNA does not change when it changes into a butterfly. The butterfly is a stage of growth in the caterpillar’s life.
Our goal is to use Pilates, and other mind body exercises as a catalyst to discover the whole you, the true you. Like the caterpillar, we hope that you discover the butterfly in you.
